The artistic flair of Beaconhills year three students has been seen in the classroom and soon it’ll be shown to the world as it features on a Melbourne tram.

The students from the Berwick campus were “over the moon” when their art teacher Kyla Whitfield announced their collective design was chosen for the major public art project.

“They were super excited, we had a class party that day,” Ms Whitfield said.

Part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Melbourne Art Trams are a popular annual transformation project where trams are turned into moving canvases wearing artworks created entirely by the public.

Each year eight creative projects across Victoria are chosen to make over a tram each.

The Beaconhills Year 3 Collective represented Melbourne in their tram design, creating a series of body shapes in a similar style to the work of popular American artist Keith Haring, with the piece having an ultimate focus on unity and harmony in the community.

Student Ava Ramani participated in the project and drew a girl on the grass, holding a heart.

“I thought it would be welcoming to say ‘hi’ with a heart,” Ava said.

The first Melbourne Art Tram for 2019 will be launched on Tuesday 8 October, with the other seven trams to be progressively rolled out, remaining on the streets until August 2020.

The festival will announce a People’s Choice Award following the release of the trams, with the public asked to vote on their favourite tram by visiting www.festival.melbourne/arttrams.
