With last year marking the 100th anniversary since the end of World War One, Kooweerup Secondary College was inspired to create a memorial garden, honouring those fallen.

Kooweerup Secondary College teacher Leonie McGinley and creative gardener Linny Jenkins generated the idea to create an area of reflection for those whom made the supreme sacrifice – their lives.

“We chose this area at the front of the school for its quiet space and street appeal,” Ms Jenkins said.

“It has all come together wonderfully and respectfully. I am very honoured and proud to be able to create this mindful space for the students, staff and locals to reflect and learn.”

Ms Jenkins’ friend from Z and N Custom Cutting lazer cut a lone soldier and a backdrop using steel. The garden, full of bright red geraniums and two species of rosemary, was retained with sleepers.

The school collaborated with the Kooweerup RSL to have the names of the fallen soldiers permanently on display.

“We particularly wanted the names and ages of these soldiers as the ages as young as 17 is pertinent to the students,” Ms Jenkins added.

Ex-student and Custom Steel Signs owner Daniel Smith created the list from cut steel, with the school’s electrician kindly donating a brand new light to showcase the garden every night.
