A community barbecue was held to raise funds and support Kelvin Rees, also known as ‘Lefty’, and his family on Thursday 28 November.

The community united in front of Coles at Pakenham Place, where Lefty was intentionally knocked to the ground and airlifted to hospital on 12 November.

“The money is going into a fund for Lefty for medical needs and whatever else he needs,” organiser Doreen Boath said.

“We just wanted to do a barbecue because everybody in Pakenham knows Lefty so we thought it was a good idea to give back to him for all the work he’s done.

“We’ve received lots of support – it’s been great.”

Lefty is well-known locally for voluntarily sweeping the streets of Pakenham on the daily.

He was released out of ICU on 25 November and remains in a ward at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
