A bumbling burglar has attempted to blur a security camera by spraying a water substance on it during a botched break in at Emerald.

Investigators believe two men entered a property on Mary Street on 9 December 2019, about 12.45pm.

Despite the water spray failing to conceal their activity, the men proceeded to use bolt cutters to smash window panels before gaining access to a garage.

A security alarm was set off in the process, spooking the pair who fled the scene in a white Holden Rodeo, which was allegedly being driven with false plates.

The occupants of the house weren’t home during the incident.

Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit detectives have released images of the two men who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

One man, aged approximately 35 to 45 years old, is perceived as being of Caucasian appearance with grey hair and a small tattoo on his left outer forearm.

His alleged accomplice is approximately 45 to 50 years old, with an olive complexion and short dark hair.
