A man has tragically died after he was shot on a property in Dewhurst.

The Gazette understands the man, believed to be in his early 60s, was with a group of friends on a hunting expedition at a property on Blue Ridge Road when the fatal incident occurred, just before 10.30pm on Saturday 11 January.

Police believe the victim received the gunshot wound after a firearm was accidentally discharged by another member of the group.

The group, who were all known to each other, had permission to shoot “pest animals” like deer on the property.

Emergency services responded to the scene and gave the man CPR until paramedics were able to transport him to The Alfred hospital by air ambulance.

Sadly, he died upon arrival.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed that a man was questioned in relation to the incident and was assisting detectives with their inquiries.

A man, believed to be in his 70s, was also transported to hospital after reportedly suffering chest pain.

It’s unknown whether a health issue might have been a contributing factor to the firearm being accidentally discharged.

The investigation remains ongoing.
