Students from secondary and primary schools across the Diocese of Sale gathered in Beaconsfield at St Francis Xavier College to celebrate the launch of ‘Project Compassion’.

The visit, which was carried out by the Diocese and catholic relief organisation Caritas International, was a call for students to create a positive change within their own communities, while also encouraging those around them to do the same.

Bishop of Sale Patrick O’Regan joined Caritas Australia justice educator Gwen Michener to address students on Tuesday 25 February with the intention of inspiring them to come together to promote justice at both a local and global scale.

The visit also had a focus on finding solutions to help end world poverty.

Diocese of Sale deputy director of Catholic education Debra Punton said ‘Project Compassion’ gave students an opportunity to advocate for the less fortunate, in line with the Diocese’s commitment in protecting vulnerable people.

“A key tenet of Catholic education is embedding Catholic social teaching in the lived experience of the school,” Ms Punton said.

“Throughout the year, and especially during Lent, our staff and students are encouraged to connect with the global community, providing hope for a just and fair world.”

The compassion project is Caritas Australia’s annual awareness and fundraising appeal, which will see staff and students across the Diocese working with their local community in the six weeks leading up to Easter Sunday to raise money for those in need.
