A bumbling thief has been caught red handed, allegedly found with six stolen credit cards and a motorbike in his possession.

Police were parked on Princes Highway in Berwick on Saturday 4 April when a passerby notified the officers about a man who was struggling to start a motorbike at nearby High Street.

As police began to drive to the location, two other people had contacted emergency services to report that the man, who was not believed to be wearing any protective clothing or a helmet, was now in the middle of the road attempting to push the bike.

The Gazette understands a 24-year-old man was located at a nearby carpark, before allegedly dropping the motorbike and attempting to run from the scene once he noticed police.

Officers gave chase on foot and were able to catch up to the man before arresting him at the scene.

The man, who has been remanded in custody, was found with six credit cards, all in different names, which have been linked to recent car break ins.

Police also confirmed the motorbike had been stolen from a recent burglary.
