Police have carried out an “extensive” yet unsuccessful search along the Princes Highway following reports that an unknown man had been struck by a passing motorist.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were investigating after an “unknown man” mysteriously appeared along the 100 kilometre stretch of road in Garfield, just before 8pm on Friday 29 May.

A startled motorist is believed to have swerved to avoid the pedestrian, but was uncertain as to whether any contact was made.

The concerned driver returned to the scene a short time later and alerted police, who arrived to investigate the “possible collision”.

A witness reportedly saw a man “hunched over” at the scene.

An “extensive search” of the nearby area was conducted however no pedestrian was located.

The SES were called to assist in the search, however were cancelled en route.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman was unable able to confirm how long the search was carried out for or how many officers were involved.

They said the pedestrian was described as wearing grey track pants and an orange jumper.

Police are appealing for the person involved in the incident or anyone with information that could assist police in confirming this unknown pedestrian’s welfare to contact Pakenham Police Station on 5945 2500.
