Pakenham’s hotspot title is now in question, after data from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) revealed there is only one active case of Covid-19 in the Cardinia Shire.

The positive news comes on a relatively dark day in the fight against coronavirus, as Victoria recorded 71 new cases, the highest number since March.

In nearby Casey, there is a total of 16 active cases, bringing the municipalities total number of cases to 103.

According to the Department, Pakenham is still classed as a “priority suburb” and the suburban testing blitz will still target the area.

Cardinia Shire Council mayor Jeff Springfield told the Gazette that residents of the shire had been doing a “good job” in following the advice of authorities.

“At this point in time, there is no lockdown mentioned for Pakenham or Cardinia Shire, but we will follow the advice of the health authorities if that changes,” he said.

The Gazette has reached out to the State Government to ask why Pakenham was still referred to as a hotspot suburb.

More to come.
