When the mandatory mask rule came into play, two Berwick Girl Guides girls wanted to do something to help out their community.

Nine-year-old Jasmine and 11-year-old Felicity sat down at their mum’s sewing machine and began to produce faces masks, which are now compulsory for all Victorians.

In just a matter of weeks, the girls have sold 41 face masks to residents across the Cardinia Shire and Casey, as well as Canberra, Queensland and North Coast in New South Wales.

With $2 per mask being donated to the Berwick Girl Guides, they have raised more than $80 to date.

“Berwick Girl Guides normally have a couple of barbecue fundraisers a year plus biscuits selling – 2020 has seen none of this happen,” their mum Amy Winnington said.

“We love Girl Guides and know how critical fundraising is – that is why Jasmine and Felicity came up with this idea.”

Jasmine and Felicity cut and sewed the masks, while Ms Winnington helped with the final top stitching.

They had their nanny send elastic down from Queensland due to the great elastic shortage.

Prior to the Stage 4 restrictions, the girls set up at stall outside their house for people to pop by and purchase a mask or two.

With the increased restrictions, they will now be selling via Facebook.
