A $150,000 renewal project is set to transform the Cardinia Cultural Centre and Lakeside Shopping Centre.

As part of a State Government $3 million fund to boost business activity at shopping strips, the grounds of both sites will be upgraded to promote outdoor dining as part of the roadmap out of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lakeside Renewal Project will create new public seating, single level walkways, landscaping, lighting and a mural at Cardinia Cultural Centre.

A number of ‘parklets’ will also be created at the Lakeside shopping strip, as well as at other commercial areas across the Shire.

‘Parklets’ are parking bays that are repurposed to create spaces for pedestrian activity and outdoor dining.

The announcement on 16 September by Bass MP Jordan Crugnale has since been welcomed by Cardinia Shire Council, who contributed $50,000 to the project.

Ms Crugnale said the upgrade would support many struggling local businesses including retailers, cafes, restaurants and service providers.

“We are all focused and connecting more locally during these times and this program adds to that community heart by colouring up and activating the area around Lakeside Pakenham,” Ms Crugnale said.

“The Neighbourhood Activity Centre Renewal Fund is also supporting local jobs and local businesses as we navigate through this pandemic as best we can.”

Vista Cafe owner Adam Sadiqzai, who also operates Khans Hospitality Services at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, said the funding would create much needed disability friendly spaces in the area.

“It’s really exciting,” he said.

“I think it’s great news for Lakeside residents and it’s just going to make this whole area have a greater access to the entire community.”

Works are set to commence in November this year, pending Covid-19 restrictions, and are expected to be complete in April 2021.
