The Garfield Recreation Reserve gatehouse has got its game face on thanks to a Cardinia Shire Council beautification grant, the Garfield Community Shop and the Garfield Recreation Reserve Committee.

The artwork was painted by Sheldon Headspeath of State Of The ART Murals in Frankston and finishing touches to the door will be completed by local business owner Dale Macdonald of DJM Signwriting.

Garfield community garden coordinator Meg Platte got the ball rolling for the mural.

“I pitched the idea of having a mural to the Garfield Recreation Reserve Committee and they thought the gatehouse would be a perfect location,” she said.

The front door to the gatehouse will list all the users of the recreation reserve, including tennis, netball, cricket and lawn bowl clubs, the community garden and community house, showcasing how all the different groups work together.

Ms Platte said the mural was a combined community project illustrating all the great activities taking place at the reserve.

“The fun mural brightens the entrance to the recreation reserve even more, adds life to the area and sends the message that we are proud of our footy,” she said.

“We’d love to see more murals throughout town.”

Mr Headspeath – who previously painted the mural at the Garfield community garden in 2021 – has been working on murals for more than 20 years.

“Meg from the community garden reached out to me to do the mural and I always love working at the sporting clubs because I coach a lot of clubs myself,” he said.

Mr Headspeath spent three days completing the artwork.

“Meg gave me a rough draft of what they were after and then I just had to figure out how to make the most of the small surface,” he said.

“I love the finished product – it’s a great logo.”

He said he hoped to paint a mural at the local netball club in the near future.
