WGCA DISTRICT DIVISION TEAM OF THE YEAR
It was a WGCA District season that saw some big totals and plenty of fine bowling performances.
There’s no doubt that the team of the year was hard to decipher, with an array of players putting their hands up throughout the season, but as with any cricket team, there can only be 11 players selected.
Michael Giles and Ash Smith both had wonderful seasons with the bat and earned their opening nods, while leading run-scorer Mitch Thomas provides a massive middle order boost.
Meanwhile, the division’s leading wicket-taker, Sean Somers, backs up last season’s selection with another team of the year gong in 2018/19.
Here is the team:
Michael Giles (NNG/Maryknoll) – 468 runs at 66.9, 3 wickets at 35.3
Ash Smith (Officer) – 496 runs at 38.2, 14 wickets at 20.5
David Nutting (Carlisle Park) –  428 runs at 32.9, 17 wickets at 25.1
Kulith Rabel (Cranbourne Meadows) –  445 runs at 44.5
Mitch Daley (Emerald) –  411 runs at 34.25, 6 wickets at 28.3
Mitch Thomas (Emerald) – 510 runs at 46.4, 4 wickets at 58
Mitch Copey (wk, Emerald) –  312 runs at 39
Dean Henwood (NNG/Maryknoll) – 122 runs at 20.3, 26 wickets at 9.38

Sean Somers (NNG/Maryknoll) – 105 runs at 13.1, 35 wickets at 13.6
Dwayne Doig (Cardinia) – 146 runs at 20.9, 25 wickets at 19.8

WGCA SUB-DISTRICT DIVISION TEAM OF THE YEAR
The gap between the top four and the bottom four teams was evident on the ladder and the WGCA Sub-District team of the year is another example of a season dominated by Lang Lang, Catani, Kooweerup and Pakenham Upper/Toomuc.
Dustin Peebles’ extraordinary season sees him open the batting and you’d be tempted to open the bowling with him too, while Pakenham Upper/Toomuc’s Sahan Wijeratne can also do it all. Lang Lang’s firepower with the bat sees them earn three selections.
Here is the team:
Dustin Peebles (Catani) – 607 runs at 60.7, 30 wickets at 11.4
Jess Grima (Lang Lang) – 651 runs at 46.5, 7 wickets at 26.6
Sahan Wijeratne (Pak. Upper/Toomuc) – 557 runs at 111.4, 17 wickets at 21.1
Nathan Phillips (Lang Lang) – 579 runs at 44.5, 9 wickets at 25.1
