DEEP CREEK

A thick fog descended on Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday morning before the sun poked through to present a beautiful day to resume competition play after the recent Covid-lockdown.

The June Monthly Medal was up for grabs, played under stableford conditions instead of the traditional stroke format.

Adan Voumard walked away the big winner, scoring 39 points – off a handicap of 12 – to score a one-shot victory over long-time member Geoff Percival (16).

Percival’s 38 points kept him one-shot clear of Shane Dehaan (19), Levi Sua (11) and Clayton Inia (17) on 37, with David Mair (10) and Steven Smith (11) a further shot away on 36.

They were the only seven golfers to play to their handicaps, with Glenn Rees (10), Theo Van Roy (18) and Ronald Zomer (29) not far off the mark on 35 points.

Two shots further back on 33 points was Liz Garvey (39), with Yvonne Smith (19) the only other player above the 30-point barrier – scoring 31.

The best performance of the week was carded in Wednesday’s stableford competition where Rex Ryan kissed his 20-handicap goodbye by shooting a fine round of 41 points.

The course was at the mercy of many golfers with David McMahon (10) finishing second on 39 points with Rob Nobelius (13), Royce Thompson (21), Graeme Steel (28), Mal Davey (6) and Timothy Pratt (8) just a shot further back on 38.

Rounding out a healthy list of scores were Harry Elyasie (5), Roger Parker (12), Kel Trickey (28), John Hutcheon (13) and Ronald Zomer (30) on 37, Chris McConnell (14) 36, with Bajan Sangah (16), Tom Mc Dermott (23), Theo Van Roy (18), Heath Barclay (7) and Chris Kondarios (16) all coming in with scores of 35 points.

A leftie took control of Sunday’s stableford competition with Matthew Hogan (16) scoring 37 points to score a comprehensive three-shot victory over Simon Fay (26) 34.

GARFIELD

After yet another shut down of two weeks competition golf finally returned on Saturday with a big field of 115 presenting for the day’s game of single stableford which got under way after a foggy start.

Damien Hammond, having a long consistent run of good results, was the best by far with an A Grade win of 42 points playing off his mark of 10 to defeat Richard Perry by five points.

Gary Bassett, yet another golfer whom is enjoying a consistent run, finished third with 36 points playing off his handicap of just five. Peter Marquis broke a long run of outs to get the B Grade decision with a nice score of 40 points playing off his mark of 17 to defeat Paul Kaye by the two points.

Robert Murphy won the C Grade event with a score of 36 points playing off his handicap of 21 to defeat Allan Milkins by two points.

A final score of 32 points, less than usual, was good enough to win a ball down the line which highlights that typical winter golf scores are now the norm and adds further merit to the score achieved by Damien Hammond.

Leesa Matthews was the best achiever for the ladies event with a winning score of 37 points playing off her mark of 17 as well as having the three nearest the pins. Speaking of nearest the pins Amanda McLure made it 28 in total over the last six months by scoring the other two nearest the pins. Please check the clubs facebook page for next week’s event type.
