The best of the best…

The AFL South East Regional Junior Championships kicked off last week, with some of the most exciting youngsters from four junior different leagues playing two games. Gazette sports journalist Tyler Lewis found some interesting tidbits from the start of the carnival..

ORZOI’S OUTRAGEOUS DAY OUT

In the opening game for the under-14s, South East Junior Jamie Orzoi booted eight majors in the big win.

SEJ won by over 100 points to start the carnival off with a bang.

It wasn’t enough to capture the delight of his coaches though; Jamie was only named third best on – what is going on there, come on coaches, the youngster kicked twice as many goals as his opposition…

CASEY ‘ANTARCTIC’ FIELDS

The under-15 girls played at Casey Fields on Sunday and from all reports, they’re still thawing out.

The Casey Fields complex is located right in the middle of the south east growth corridor, but on the weekend it was nothing but an icy wind corridor.

From the photos the Gazette’s photographers captured, not many long sleeves for the young girls, perhaps time to invest for the girls, otherwise interchange stints in the car with hands on the heater might become a regularity.

FORWARDS SELL MEMBERSHIPS, DEFENDERS WIN PREMIERSHIPS

It’s the old saying and it often rings true.

The under-15 boys opening game was no exception, with the SEJ defenders holding tight, it took until the final term for the opposition to kick its first goal.

The scoreboard reads a big nine goal win where the forwards got the job done, but no one ever wants to admit it comes from the back six.

Well done defenders!

SITTING PRETTY

There is certainly some talent in the South East region and a lot of it’s spilling out of the under-16 boys’ team.

SEJ had a thumping 119 point win in the opening game, with an impressive ten individual goal kickers.

In the second game, they went again, this time winning by 40 points.

But in respectful fashion, the SEJ side decided to give its opponent a head start at quarter time before doing what they do best.

Defenders haven’t found a kryptonite for Josip Albert yet, he has kicked four in both games, well done Josip!

THE ALMOST MIRACLE

All footy fans have heard of the miracle on grass, back in 2012 the Brisbane Lions roared home against the Cats to steal a miracle comeback win.

Well the under-17 boys almost pulled off a similar feat down at Rosebud on Sunday.

It’s a big ground at Olympic Park, speak to a Rosebud local for longer than three minutes and they’ll tell you it is the same size as the iconic MCG.

So when SEJ were down 23 points at half-time without a goal, it was going to take something special.

The third term was exactly that with the under-17s kicking four goals to their oppositions no score.

Leading at three quarter time, it looked like a miracle comeback was on the cards, but the MPJFL used its home ground advantage to steal the win late.

TIME TO RALLY BEHIND THE GIRLS

The under-18 girls haven’t been able to sneak in a win so far in the tournament, losing both its games.

But the Gazette believes by putting it out into the universe, the footy gods will take over and the girls will win its last game against the Frankston JFL.

Stranger things have happened, but we can see a best afield match-winning performance coming from Tylah Burn coming on July 21.

William Nisbet shaking off his opponent on his way to another kick, we were reliably told he had 35 of them. 242707
