CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

Midweek Pennant

Winners were grinners in the Cardinia Waters club rooms last Tuesday after both mid-week teams won their games.

Team one played Dandenong Club at home, and in a tough encounter survived the tussle to win by one shot.

With two rinks completed and the other with one end to play, scores were level. Cardinia Waters managed to win the last end of that game by one shot, giving the home team the victory two rinks up, and a solitary shot win.

Best winning rink was John Van Vugt’s.

He played with Dennis Patmore, Del Dance and Simon Koning. They won 24/10.

The other winning rink was skipped by Bryan Stevens, ably assisted by Bill Hite, Mick Knight and Robert Mitchell. They won by three shots.

Side one now sit in second place on the ladder, just one point behind section leader Narre Warren. Next week they play away at Edithvale.

Meanwhile side two travelled to Willow Lodge to participate in the ‘Battle of the Retirement Villages’.

Facing the team that won their Division Five Pennant last year Cardinia Waters found they had a real battle on their hands. However, despite one rink taking a serious flogging the visitors kept their heads up and at lunch held a slender four-shot lead. After lunch Cardinia Waters maintained, then extended their lead ending up winning by two rinks and nine shots up.

The two winning rinks scores were identical 23/14. They were Tom Gogan, Jenny Edmonds, Michele Bondfield and Terry Nye. Also on the same score were John Moore, Marie Stephenson, Graeme Taylor and Ian Kennedy.

Next week side two play Dandenong Club at home, and are second place on the ladder.

Saturday Pennant

Cardinia Waters side one hosted it’s Saturday game against Narre Warren side two at home, and comfortably defeated the visitors winning three of the four rinks and finishing 18 shots up.

John Van Vugt’s rink was most impressive winning easily by 20 shots. John was well supported by Bill Hite, Del Dance and Donny Gibson.

Also winning comfortably was the four of Keith Lewis, Ray and Jill Naylor and Bill Tippelt, who finished their 21 ends with a winning score of 22/8.

The other rink that won was skipped by Phil Wynd. His team consisted of Ashley Graham, Mick Knight and Robert Mitchell. They won by eight shots.

Side one now sit in third position on the ladder behind Berwick. They are equal on points, but Berwick have the better percentage.

In what will be an intriguing game next week Cardinia Waters play Berwick at home. Fresh from their win this week against top team Cranbourne RSL, Berwick will be a big test for the home team.

It was a different game, with a similar result for Cardinia Waters side two.

Playing on an unfamiliar grass green in very windy conditions at Highett, they were struggling early with just one rink holding its own.

Being 10 shots down at the break and needing something special they found it in a remarkable turnaround by Tom Gogan’s rink. That group were one shot behind with six ends to play. They then shut their opponents out of the game winning the last six ends in a row by a total of 19 shots.

Included in that 19 shots was one winning end of seven shots. Tom Gogan was well supported by Stuart Tokely, Peter Mitchell and Jenny Cole.

The other winning rink was John Moore, John Carr, Gary Bondfield and Alan Copley. They won by four shots.

Side two now hold down fourth place on the ladder, and next week travel to Clayton.
