GARFIELD GOLF

2022 OPEN TOURNAMENT

Garfield held its annual open tournament the week just gone with events up for decision Wednesday thru Sunday played on a course in good order for this time of the year.

Wednesday kicked things off with a 4BBB event with the overall scoring of a good standard.

The winners on a count-back with a round of 44 points were Ian Scott and Hank Adams defeating the Vitiritti’s, George and Gary, in the process.

A final score of 41 points or better was required to get a ball down the line.

Jeanette Mitchell and Heather Payne won the ladies event with a score of 42 points.

The ninth hole provided a progressive nearest the pin for the week and Joe Tonso kicked things off by a margin to the pin of 2.73 metres.

On Thursday a field of 66 turned out for the event of single stableford which was played with a howling easterly wind giving golfers plenty of trouble and effecting the low presenting scores.

Not one, that’s right, not one player for the day was able to play to their handicap of 36 points or better.

Greg Macklin capped off a good day by winning the A Grade event on a count back from the luckless Ash Graham with a round of 35 points.

Graham recently also lost the recent major event, the King Trophy, also by a count-back decision. Bob Calderara also had a score of 35 points to finish in third position.

The well-travelled veteran Charlie Hardy won the B Grade event, also with a score of 35 points, defeating Trevor Burnie by the solitary point.

Ian Nicholson won the C Grade event, also by count-back with a round of 34 points to defeat Noel Brown.

Des Kerr scored the two nearest the pins for the day on the par three 4th and the 14th.

A final score of a paltry 31 points or better was needed to win a ball down the line.

The weekend weather was absolutely superb with not a breath of wind to contend with.

Tym Davey was the scratch A Grade winner with a 36-hole total of 154, whilst Clint Williams was the A Grade handicap winner with a total of 138, defeating Harry Matthews by the three shots.

Best morning 18-hole score was achieved by Glenn Morris with a nice round of 67 whilst Ian Hopper had the best afternoon round of 68.

Terry Garratt, a player in good touch, won the 27-hole B Grade scratch event with a score of 119 whilst Andrew Hale got the handicap win with a score of 97.5.

The C Graders played an 18-hole game of single stableford which was taken out by Steve Clark with a score of 41 points defeating a very much in form Rob Morris by the one point.

Rod Norton improved on the progressive nearest the pin with a distance of 1.585 metres.

Next weekend is the Easter Cup over the four days of play, Friday thru Monday, with the winner decided by the best two round total.
