A pop-up art gallery is set to reinvent the old Gazette office in Main St Pakenham.

The Cardinia Art Society will be hosting the art exhibition and sale in the newly restored building, while paying tribute to the Gazette’s history.

An installation will recreate the editor’s office strewn with Gazette memorabilia and items from areas long gone.

The old printing press and Linotype machine remain on site and are works of art in their own right.

Art society president Jillian Ronald said the old printing office, which the Gazette stopped using in 1994, was a piece of Pakenham’s history.

“The building has recently been renovated which will preserve this piece of Pakenham History into the future,” she said.

“The character of the building makes a great backdrop for some interesting pieces. We have paintings, sculptures and even an interactive garden installation.”

Ms Ronald encouraged children to bring a small item, like a flower made from recycled materials or a painted rock, to add to the garden.

The art exhibition will feature artworks from local and visiting artists.

“This is a great opportunity to buy original art and quirky items from the gift shop. Buy a gift and support artists at the same time,” Ms Ronald said.

“We are very excited to be able to have this opportunity to bring our amazing artist’s work into Main St Pakenham.”

A competition is also being held to see who can bring the oldest or most interesting piece of memorabilia that is associated with the Gazette.

It could be an old Gazette edition, or something interesting that the Gazette has printed – maybe an old photograph, racing ticket or a wedding invite.

The competition winners will receive a prize which could be vouchers and items from the surrounding businesses and a year’s subscription to the Gazette.

Hard copy can only be awarded to residents within the distribution area. Digital membership is available to all.

The pop-up art gallery will be open for viewing 10am to 4pm 18 April to 14 May (not including Mondays).

Entry is free, but a gold coin donation would be appreciated.

Opening night is Saturday 22 April 5pm to 7pm, $20 per head, pre-purchase at trybooking.com/CHKUL
