Waste strategy ‘enlightened’

THE City of Casey’s commercial waste strategy for shopping centres will be open for public comment in the near future.
Casey mayor Neil Lucas said the commercial waste document was fair, equitable and enlightened.
Cr Lucas said he hoped that over time the strategy would be proved right. He said commercial garbage collection had been a difficult issue for the council and congratulated council officers for developing the new strategy.
“Problems with garbage collections in our commercial centres have been a concern,” he said.
Casey manager of engineering services David Richardson said in a report to the Tuesday 6 September council meeting that the strategy was developed after consultation with traders and private sector service providers.
Mr Richardson said 30 strategy options and actions were identified for the council to follow.
He said these were divided into three areas – services, guidelines and local laws, and education.
“The strategy involves the expanded provision of the council waste and recycling services to small and medium enterprises in shopping centres,” he said.
“It also recommends council facilitation and encouragement of improved services to larger business in shopping centres by private sector service providers.
“The full package of strategy actions is expected to provide more userfriendly collection services to traders, reduce recycling and disposal costs to traders, improve the amenity of shopping centres, and improve diversion of waste to landfill,” Mr Richardson said.
