Market grows for Christmas

SUPPLY increased with Christmas closing in at VLE Pakenham, but a reasonable number of the lift in supply were grown steers and bullocks.
There were also a few cows penned.
Selling to all of the regular buyers, the large and better quality offering generally sold to dearer trends.
While young cattle prices varied quite a lot, between eight cents dearer and five cents cheaper, the heavier cattle were three cents to seven cents per kilogram dearer.
There were more vealers penned, totaling 630 head, and the quality was better.
Stronger demand saw the top prices at 248 cents, which was three cents more, but a number of other vealers were six cents to eight cents per kilogram dearer.
The general run of vealers sold between 210 cents and 240 cents, while plain shape D muscle vealers sold between 172 cents and 215 cents per kilogram.
There was strong demand from feedlots for better bred vealers.
Of the 550 yearlings penned, most sold well, although heavy fat cover did produce some discounting.
Steers sold between 190 cents to 220 cents with supplementary fed to 240 cents per kilogram, and these prices were for light and medium weight steers.
Heavier steers sold from 185 cents to 198 cents per kilogram.
Supplementary fed heifers sold to 220 cents, but most made between 184 cents and 200 cents per kilogram. Plainer steers and heifers sold from 152 cents to 190 cents per kilogram.
The balance of the yarding was made up of 330 grown steers and bullocks, and 60 grown heifers, plus 55 cows and bulls.
Prices for the better quality cows and heifers were between 150 cents and 166 cents for cows, and 165 cents to 169 cents per kilogram for heifers.
