Walk out on this Tammy

Tammy (M)
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon
OH MELISSA McCarthy, what have you gone and done?
I rate this funny fat girl as quite the funniest woman on Earth at the moment – better even than Kirsten Wiig.
Heck, if she’d been in The Other Woman, she might have even made that dreadful film almost watchable.
But it’s all gone more than a bit wrong here, producing a film that barely works on any level and is, frankly, just about walk-out bad.
Even McCarthy’s trademark physical comedy – such a hallmark of films like Bridesmaids and The Heat – desert her.
The plot is a run-down road trip that features various disasters befalling the fat, helpless Tammy. Rather than laughing at or with her, we just feel sorry for her.
The madness is elevated by Susan Sarandon, in the biggest miscasting of the year, playing Tammy’s grandmother and joining her on the facile road trip.
As I write this, I truly can’t remember what the purpose of this vehicular journey was. Perhaps that’s a good thing as my memory is already starting to blank out this stinker.
Comedy with a difference – it’s not funny. Better to do a pre-emptive walkout, and not go in the first place.
