A rough night’s sleep

Before I Go To Sleep (R)
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Mark Strong, Colin Firth

BE WARNED – it’s a chick flick.
I’m in no position to judge if it’s a good chick flick or not – but I’m tempted to say no.
The almost always underwhelming Nicole Kidman joins the almost always pretty good Mark Strong and the almost always understated Colin Firth in a movie that is almost adequate.
Marketed as a thriller, it’s a bit of a pot-boiler and mostly one for the ladies.
Kidman stars as the victim of a violent attack who, unable to form new memories after her head injury, has to reacquaint herself with her life every day when she wakes up.
Is her loving husband all that he seems? Where are her friends? And what about the doctor who appears to be a saviour … is he friend or foe?
You’re getting the idea – it’s a bodice ripper without the bodice.
And by the way, if you’re part of the growing White Ribbon movement, you’ll probably find most of the violence discomforting – hence the box office poison of the R rating.
Aiming for slick and stylish, the producers have ended up with satisfactory.
In a nutshell, if you’re trying to avoid the biblical extravaganza of Exodus: Gods and Kings and its bladder-terrifying length, just bite the bullet and go see Moses. You’ll thank me.
