Demand strong on increased yard

Larger numbers of bullocks and steers at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, lifted the yarding last week by 180 head and, with demand remaining firm to strong all categories, the market finished the day with good results.
The secondary section is showing the effects of the dry conditions, with the shine starting to leave the well finished better pens.
Bullock weights were similar to the previous week and this category was stronger. Steers returned the best results with a good lift of 13 cents in the average, with heifers close behind.
Veal was firm on the previous sale and with a few more numbers in the top end lifted their average by 2 per cent.
The yard average was up six cents to 212.8 cents.
One hundred and forty six bullock topped at 235 cents, firm, and averaged 208.5 cents, up six cents; 108 heifers topped at 225 cents, back nine cents, and averaged 194.9 cents, up 12 cents; 192 steers topped at 242 cents, up eight cents, and averaged 212.7 cents, up 13 cents and vealers topped at 269.6 cents, firm, and averaged 222.2 cents, up six cents.
The Thursday Bull and Cow Sale also saw extra numbers, with 540 head penned. Bulls sold to firm demand with 24 offered.
The top was up nine cents to 244.2 cents and the average slipped four cents to 193.3 cents; 484 cows were yarded and sold to a top of 212.6 cents, up two cents, and averaged firm at 155.4 cents and 23 bullocks topped at 215 cents, up 15 cents and the average was 185.9 cents.
The yard average was 159.0 cents, back two cents.
