Our home front obsession

DESPITE a distinct lack of 19th century castle renovations, Grand Designs Australia has generated a following around the country for its quirky series of home constructions.
The Australian version of the hugely popular British design series is about to begin its fifth season.
Unique to other home renovation shows for its focus on architecture and interior design, each episode follows the transformation or construction of a selected project.
Hosted by architect Peter Maddison, the show follows a similar layout to its British counterpart and begins with Maddison meeting with homeowners to discuss the design of the project.
Showcasing a wide variety of projects and budgets, the show’s most successful episodes are undoubtedly those that profile ordinary houses undergoing budgeted transformations.
Viewers will be much more amazed by the design of a living space encapsulated by the parameters of a shipping container over the historic mansion with a million dollar budget and antiquated brickwork.
Showcasing individual aspects of the home does sometimes give the feel of a glorified ‘Better Homes and Gardens’, however the overall design is never far away and episodes are tied together neatly by the end.
With incredible before and afters, clever designs and inspiring exteriors, Grand Designs will captivate both the design lover and the experienced renovator. Fans of the UK version will not be disappointed by the Australian take, featuring amazing architecture and construction from around the country.
Season five of Grand Designs premieres on the Lifestyle Channel this week.
