Prices up despite continuing quality decline

THERE were approximately 600 export and 1000 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 360 head from the sale of a fortnight ago at the Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present and competing in a dearer market.
Quality was mixed with most cattle showing a continuing decline in condition.
There was a reasonable selection of grain assisted yearling cattle suited to the trade on offer which sold to strong competition.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butcher orders sold firm to a few cents dearer.
Yearling cattle to the trade including the grain assisted lines sold up to five cents per kilogram dearer.
Grown steers and bullocks improved three to eight cents.
Heavy weight grown heifers lifted four cents for the better finished drafts.
Heavy weight Friesian and crossbred manufacturing steers gained a couple of cents.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butchers sold from 305 cents to 344 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 295 cents and 350 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 272 cents and 345 cents.
Medium weight feeder steers made from 270 cents to 316 cents with the heifer portion from 242 cents to 315 cents.
Grown steers sold from 282 cents to 310 cents with a few grain assisted drafts offered.
Bullocks made between 280 cents and 304 cents.
Heavy weight grown heifers sold between 245 cents and 280 cents.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 236 cents to 252 cents with the crossbred portion from 242 cents to 284 cents.
