Cool conditions drag down market

SMALLER numbers and lighter quality last week saw all categories ease at the Baw Baw Livestock Exchange’s Wednesday fat sale.
Bullock numbers were up and the lack of rain and cooler conditions are starting to affect weights and condition.
As usual the good quality pens are still attracting strong competition and remain firm on recent sales.
This week again contained several pens of stores and was popular among the re-stockers who were confident of rain and feed being available.
The yard average this week slipped 17 cents to 252.5 cents, 38 bullocks made to 306 cents, up 14 cents, and averaged 252.6 cents, 52 heifers made to 293.2 cents, back 30 cents and averaged 223.6 cents, back 32 cents.
A total of 71 steers made to 309.6 cents, firm, and averaged 236.2 cents, back 13 cents, 210 vealers made to 331.6 cents, firm, and averaged 274.1 cents, back eight cents.
The Thursday sale contained 50 more head than last week with prices remaining relatively firm.
Thirteen bulls sold to 268.6 cents, back 10 cents and averaged four cents better at 234.5 cents, 12 bullocks made to 240 cents and averaged 222.9 cents and 641 cows topped at 266.6 cents, up nine cents and averaged four cents easier at 176.7 cents, with the yard average six cents easier at 179.1 cents.
The draw for 11 and 12 May is: 1, Elders; 2, SEJ; 3, Landmark; 4, Gibbon; 5, Scotts.
