Market numbers drop back as prices firm

NUMBERS were back 400 head on Wednesday last week for the weekly fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange.
Demand remained firm to stronger with the yarding averaging eight cents up at 267.8 cents, bullocks recovered some ground from last week topping at 290.2 cents, heifers averaged heavier this week with improved quality and remained firm, a similar number of steers were yarded and with the recent showers restockers took advantage of several good quality pen lots to push steer averages up and extra numbers in the better vealer pens helped lift averages.
Forty-eight bullocks topped at 290.2 cents, up 14 cents and averaged 264.5 cents, up 16 cents.
Thirty-one heifers topped at 265 cents, up four cents, and averaged 222.3 cents, firm.
Seventy seven steers topped at 290.2 cents, up 14 cents, and averaged 264.7 cents, up 30 cents.
Four hundred and twelve veal topped at 318.6 cents, firm, and averaged 273.9 cents, up six cents.
Numbers for the Thursday bull and cow sale were similar to the previous week and, considering several buyers were absent, results were improved on last week.
Thirty-five bulls reached 223.2 cents and averaged 198.8 cents, up 11 cents mainly due to extra heavy quality bulls penned, 463 cows made to a top of 250 cents and averaged 16 cents up at 187.9 cents with more pens of good quality beef cows on offer.
Only 11 bullocks were yarded and made to 272.6 cents and averaged 256.6 cents up 33 cents on the previous week.
The yard average was up 16 cents to 190.8 cents.
