A NEW classical music group is due to play its debut performance in Berwick this month.
Casey Chamber Musicians (CCM) has emerged as an Orchestral Futures Incorporated initiative that aims to connect professional musicians who live or work in the community.
The 11 professionally qualified musicians from varying age groups will perform chamber music in an intimate setting. Works will include the Dvorak Wind Serenade and others composed for string, duo and solo double bass.
Founding member and clarinet player Belinda Bolger, who has international performance experience, said the group had worked hard to develop a professional symphony orchestra based in Berwick.
“With the building of Bunjil Place and Casey council’s interest in the arts, we think the time is right to develop a professional orchestra that services the people of Casey and also our surrounding regional areas that do not have regular access to professional music makers,” she said.
“We also hope to employ professionals in our region in a bid to keep them local and dreaming large.
“What I love about the Dvorak is that it is a beautifully orchestrated work with a common appeal.
“You don’t have to know anything about classical music to appreciate this piece. And yet to classical musicians it is a treasured gem, a pleasure to perform.”
CCM plans to hold a range of concerts spanning from traditional classical events to smaller chamber concerts and pop-themed concerts that engage children.
“We are excited to produce a season with diverse appeal locally at an affordable price that also encompasses a top professional standard of performance,” Ms Bolger said.
Casey Chamber Musicians perform at 2pm on Sunday 31 July at Old Church at St Michaels, Berwick.
Ms Bolger said those interested in becoming involved in an upcoming orchestral project can contact orchestralfutures.casey@gmail.com.
