Mountain man honoured

EMERALD’S famous explorer, Alfred ‘Greg’ Gregory will be honoured this week as part of a photography exhibition.
He was the official photographer on the first-ever successful attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1953.
Mr Gregory died peacefully in his sleep in February.
A tribute to the mountaineer has been organised as part of this year’s Performing And Visual arts in Emerald (PAVE) festival.
His wife, Sue has agreed to provide about five prints to display with an outline of Greg’s achievements.
PAVE photography exhibition co-ordinator Sue Clisby said the tribute had been inspired by the tribute story, ‘Mountain Man’ in the 16 February edition of the Gazette’s sister paper, Ranges Trader Mail.
“We thought it would be a lovely thing for him because he has done so much that a lot of people locally are not aware of,” she said. “What a fascinating life he has had.”
The tribute will be one of the highlights of the photography exhibition which will be held on 10 and 11 April at the Emerald Hall.
Mrs Gregory said that the exhibition was a great honour.
“He would have been flattered,” she said.
Ms Clisby said the tribute was fitting as Mr Gregory and his wife had supported the first PAVE photography exhibition more than five years ago.
She said the show would again be a popular drawcard for budding and professional snappers.
More than 120 works will be on display from 10am until 4pm on both days of the exhibition.
