Spring is fast approaching and many birds are back chirping and brightening up walking trails throughout the Pakenham and Officer areas.

On Wednesday 4 August, Gazette photographer Gary Sissons went for a lunchtime walk along the Cardinia Aqueduct Trail and snapped some stunning photographs of the local bird life he saw along the way.

The trail, a winding gravel track through a hidden pocket of bushland, is home to many native species – and if lucky, walkers might even see the odd kangaroo or wallaby on their journey.

Gary said it was a beautiful trail that spanned about 5km in length and he encouraged other keen birdwatchers in the area to add it to their itinerary.

“I spent an hour on the Cardinia Aqueduct Trail and the bird life is getting better as the spring season approaches,” he said.

Among the birds Gary spotted in the space of just one hour were some eastern yellow robins, white-throated tree creepers, crimson rosellas and superb fairywrens to name a few.

Gary suggested families bring their kids down for a walk and give bird watching a go – it could even be a fun new game.

“Take the kids with a pen and paper and discover how many species you can see or photograph!” he said.
