Buyers pick and choose

There were approximately 560 export and 600 young cattle penned at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange representing a decrease of 340 head week-on-week.
The usual buying group was present and operating more selectively in places in a mixed market which saw export grades ease while trade lines sold to firm demand.
Quality declined a little with some lines starting to show some summer dryness and a significant drop in vealer numbers.
Trade cattle sold firm for most while feeder steers averaged a few cents dearer.
Grown steers and bullocks eased nine cents to 12 cents for most.
A limited selection of heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers slipped 20 cents while the crossbred portion sold firm.
Heavy weight vealers to butchers sold from 315 cents to 355 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 315 cents and 342 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 294 cents and 342 cents.
Feeder steers made from 312 cents to 351 cents, grown steers sold from 290 cents to 326 cents and bullocks made between 301 cents and 324 cents.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold mostly between 240 cents and 257 cents with the crossbred portion between 259 cents and 302 cents.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 30 January is 1 Rodwells, 2 Everitt, Seeley and Bennetts, 3 Alex Scott and Staff, 4 Landmark, 5 Nathan Gibbon Livestock, 6 S.E.J., 7 Elders.
The next store sale will be on Thursday 9 February at 10 am.
There will be no store sale on Australia Day, 26 January.
