The Cardinia Shire Council will fence off a 280-space car park in Treloar Lane in the middle of next month, but on Monday declared a piece of land near in Cook Drive and Henry Street open for car parking – for 150 cars.
Cardinia Shire mayor Bill Pearson said more alternative parking arrangements would be announced soon.
Councillor Pearson said more spaces would be provided at PB Ronald Reserve and in James Street.
“We are listening to what traders are saying,” he said.
Main Street traders have been critical of the council’s timing of alternative parking arrangements, saying they should have been finalised by now.
Cr Pearson said the council was keen to minimise inconvenience for shoppers and he appreciated the public’s patience at this time.
“This development proposal includes provision for the creation of 1150 public car parking spaces, including underground car parking, in the heart of Pakenham,” he said.
“This, and other initiatives currently in the planning stages, will go a long way to providing a clear long-term solution to the issue of car parking in Pakenham.
“With a project of this scale, there is bound to be some disruption to people’s normal routine but council is working to ensure the inconvenience will be minimised.”
Cr Pearson said alternative car parking would be provided for shoppers and traders, as well as site workers during the retail hub’s construction.
Cr Collin Ross urged traders to get their staff to use the new parking bay, near Retravision, to free up parks closer to the main shopping area.
Cr Pearson ensured traders that there would be enough parking for shoppers and traders, as well as site workers during the retail hub’s construction.
The council is also building a new library and public hall at the PB Ronald Reserve in a $7.1 million project in partnership with the Federal Government.
