Market’s strong yarding

NUMBERS almost doubled at VLE Pakenham, with 924 extra cattle penned.
There are two reasons behind this with higher prices the previous week influencing producers to sell, and there will most likely be a small combined sale next Monday because of the Australia Day holiday the next day.
It is a credit to producers to offer the number of cattle in good to very good condition, which covered most of the large offering. There were only a small number of plainer condition cattle sold throughout the sale.
The large penning of 960 vealers sold to strong demand from both the trade and feedlot buyers, and all sold well with some lighter weight calves selling to the higher prices. Best quality B muscle vealers made from 164 cents to 190 cents with most others between 150 cents and 180 cents per kilogram.
There were 300 yearling steers penned, and these varied greatly in weight. Prices were mostly between 147 cents and 165 cents with isolated sales to 176 cents per kilogram.
Also mixed in weight and quality were the 400 heifers sold. Better quality yearlings made from 142 cents to 167 cents with heavy and older heifers from 128 cents top 145 cents per kilogram.
A reasonable number of 200 grown cattle were penned, which included 60 bullocks. Prices for C muscle were between 150 cents and 159 cents per kilogram. Several pens of good quality cows were sold from 132 cents to 136 cents per kilogram.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 25 January is as follows: 1, Alex Scott; 2, Rodwells; 3, Everitt and Seeley; 4, Mick Hornsby; 5, Elders; 6, Landmark; 7, SEJ; 8, Nathan Gibbon.
The next store sale is Thursday 21 January commencing at 10am.
