Vealers record price rise

VEALERS at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, this week proved to be the only category to record a rise in price, while steers remained firm and bullocks and heifers both slipped with heifers most effected. A total of 173 bullocks were sold this Wednesday and eased on average by eight cents to 144.8; condition was varied with the range from 125 to 157.2 cents.
Seventy eight heifers containing several pen lots of lighter score head slipped to 132.2 and the heavy heifers made from 110 to 165, while light heifers made from 125 to 168.6.
One hundred and four steers also containing some sub 300 kilogram head remained steady at 148 cents, with heavy steers ranging from 100.6 to 167.6 and light 103.6 to 165.6. Five hundred and ten vealers made a good forward step, rising four cents to 162.4, heavy veal made from 100.6 to 200.2 and light 98.6 to 191.2. Light condition cows made up a fair percentage of the chopper market on Thursday, which had a downward effect on the average, although the good quality cattle sold to fair demand, making to a top of 140 cents.
Cows made from 66.2 to 140 cents, and bulls ranged from 81.6 to 150 cents to average 125.6. Thursday bullocks averaged 141.8 cents and also made to a top of 150 cents.
