Supply and prices up

THE supply of cattle at VLE Pakenham was almost double, which was due in part to the very hot conditions, but there was also a make-up after the public holiday.
With pastures drying out significantly and the very hot weather, some cattle were noticeably losing condition.
However, the yarding was mostly of good to very good quality and encompassed a large range of cattle from lightweight vealers through to bullocks and cows.
Despite all of this, demand was stronger and prices were unchanged to five cents per kilogram dearer with only plainer condition affecting some averages.
It has been a long time since the market has seen more than 200 cents paid for vealers but there were several single sales between 200 cents and 203.2 cents per kilogram.
Otherwise B muscle vealers made from 169 cents to 195 cents per kilogram.
The large penning of 900 vealers were mostly in good condition and C muscle vealers made from 155 cents to 178 cents per kilogram.
Feedlots and restockers purchased a number of cattle between 145 cents and 175 cents but a feature line of Charolais heifers mostly made from 187 cents to 190.6 cents per kilogram.
Most of the offering of 350 yearling steers, and 200 heifers were in good condition and included more British breeds in three score condition.
Steers made between 150 cents and 173 cents with heifers mostly from 140 cents to 157 cents per kilogram.
Several pens of heavier steers, which weighed from 480 kilograms to 580 kilograms liveweight, made up to 163 cents per kilogram.
Prime C3 and C4 bullocks made between 152 cents and 158 cents per kilogram with around 140 head sold.
Older heifers and cows made between 115 cents and 135 cents per kilogram.
