Big demand for fat cattle

A SMALLER yarding this week for the Fat Cattle Market at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw 726 head penned, which contained a good representation of all categories including some very light store calves plus several cow and calf units.
Demand was high and kept buyers and agents busy with prices reaching up to 236.2 cents. One hundred and fifty seven bullocks made to 184.6 from 142 cents, lifting the average five cents to 171, weights and condition were excellent.
Only 77 heifers made the trip and rose three cents to 155.4 for a range of 112.2 to 185.
While 162 steers saw processors and re-stockers competing for quality head, averages this week rose 12 cents to 170 cents and ranged from 120 to 195.6 cents.
A good selection of both heavy and light vealers made for a very good sale and vendors were not disappointed, with light veal making from 80 to 221.2 cents and heavy veal 110 to 236.2. These better prices lifted the average six cents to 185.3.
Several cow and calf units sold for $1050 per unit.
On Thursday, bulls remained steady on last week’s prices, with no change in averages at 147.1, the 40 bulls ranged from 110 to 175.2 cents.
Twenty nine bullocks of mixed quality eased on average to 163.5. The weight was there, but condition was lacking in a few head; bullocks ranged from 151.2 to 172. A larger proportion of light cows and dairy choppers saw 559 cows also ease slightly with the average six cents lighter at 122.2, light cows made from 75.6 to 85 cents and heavy 60 to 164.6 cents.
