Demand steps up

WITH the Easter break over, last week’s Fat Cattle Sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw 728 head yarded and all sold to solid demand with restockers, feedlotters and processors all bidding up to gain required stock.
The yard was regarded as fair to good with several lots of lighter store types for the restocking and feedlotting enterprises.
Sixty eight good quality bullocks sold to a top of 184 cents and the average remained steady at 169.6 cents.
Bullock prices ranged from 138 cents to 184 cents.
One hundred and sixteen heifers gained a little ground to return an average of 159.1 cents and ranged from 123 cents to 188.2 cents.
Two hundred and thirteen steers had a very good day, rising three cents on average to 169 cents, and ranged from 125 cents to a very good top of 193.6 cents. Feedlotters featured well in this category.
Four hundred and eight veal also rose in price, lifting five cents to 187.5 cents, mainly pushed up by the storey calves which sold to restockers for up to 244.2 cents.
Heavier veal for processing made to 230.2 cents, prices for veal saw heavy vealers range from 74.2 cents to 230.2 cents and light 79.2 cents to 244.2 cents.
A similar size yarding to the previous full sale on Thursday saw bulls ease ever so slightly overall, only due to the yarding of some lighter quality bulls, better bulls improved as the top reached 179.6 cents, the range for bulls was 95.2 cents to 179.6 cents with 35 head penned.
Twenty two bullocks averaged 169.7 cents and reached a top of 175.6 cents.
Five hundred and five cows gained 10 cents to 120.8 cents, quality was one factor and the lack of available stock last week saw processors in need of a few head, cows made from 50 cents to 160 cents.
The draw for Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 April is as follows: 1, Scotts; 2, Gibbon; 3, Landmark; 4, SEJ; 5, Elders.
