College wins

BEACONHILLS College has secured federal funding for drug education.
The college won one of a limited number of education grants on offer from ‘School and Community Approaches to Drug Education’ (SCADE), a division of the Department of Education.
The role of SCADE is to assist schools to implement projects to strengthen their capacity to deliver drug education, promote personal safety of students and to develop students’ drug specific knowledge.
This program aims to educate our students about leadership in the context of living as a true leader, modelling safe behaviour, making informed choices and discouraging peers from using drugs and alcohol.
The successful application was for the Beaconhills College ‘Leadership, Intervention, Success and Safety without Drugs’ and is run over two days to allow time for students to absorb and practice new information. The first day divided males and females into separate groups, where they each worked with guest presenters and participated in additional workshops.
The girl’s session was facilitated by Tiffiny Hall, a personal trainer, who encouraged participation in an activity based workshop exploring the concepts of personal motivation, leadership among your peers, safety and physical health.
Motivational speaker Shane Garner led the boy’s discussion and activity based workshop which uses humour to explore the concept of leadership styles, peer relationships, personal motivation and physical safety.
The on-going theme of Leadership and Influence will be revisited and will provide students with opportunities to practice how they would cope in a variety of scenarios involving drugs and alcohol. Experts from within the field of drug education will present, as will a variety of community presenters to encourage greater community links for students.
