Poor quality drags down market prices

DESPITE heading toward another long weekend, which will see no sale at VLE Pakenham on the Monday, there were 500 fewer cattle penned, comprising 250 vealers, 950 yearlings and 70 grown cattle.
Demand was strong but the quality, or lack of it, set the price trends with better quality selling at rates two cents to seven cents dearer.
Poor quality saw some prices ease up to four cents per kilogram.
There were few vealers penned and these sold very well, as did a number of yearlings, and the heifer portion showed some of the larger increases.
Isolated sales of top quality vealers were between 200 cents and 226 cents with most others making from 175 cents to 212 cents per kilogram.
There was a reasonable supply of supplementary fed yearlings that made between 190 cents and 225 cents per kilogram.
Yearling steers made mostly between 175 cents and 199 cents but there were numerous pens of D3 and C2 and three score heifers that made from 176 cents to 189 cents per kilogram, effectively selling better than some steers.
Both competition and demand was strong for cattle to feed on with most being purchased to feed on grain through the winter months.
Better bred steers and heifers made from 182 cents to 200 cents and others were mostly between 155 cents and 185 cents per kilogram.
Prices for grown steers were also higher with most making from 175 cents to 185 cents and there were some heavy yearlings that made to 189 cents per kilogram.
Plainer condition steers and some heifers made from 149 cents to 172 cents per kilogram.
