Demand strong and prices steady

IT IS the middle of August and there was a larger penning of cattle offered at VLE Pakenham.
The larger yarding were mostly of good to very good quality and even the plainer shape D muscle cattle had some reasonable finish.
Despite the number penned, demand remained strong and prices were mostly unchanged.
However, there was some very strong competition for better quality vealers and supplementary fed yearlings, which sold to dearer rates.
Prices for the best quality B muscle vealers reached 238.6 cents with a good number of sales between 220 cents and 235 cents per kilogram.
Supplementary fed yearlings of similar quality made to a high of 235 cents with most of these making from 200 cents to 220 cents per kilogram.
These ranges of prices were three cents to four cents per kilogram dearer. Other vealers made mostly from 180 cents to 210 cents per kilogram from a penning of 285 head.
Approximately 700 yearlings were penned with many good quality drafts of steers and heifers that weighed between 400 kilograms and 560 kilograms liveweight.
Prices for the lighter weight steers were between 185 cents and 210 cents with similar heifers from 178 cents to 196 cents per kilogram.
Heavy steers sold to a good range of local and export processors from 180 cents to 196 cents, and 51 grown steers reached up to 193 cents per kilogram.
There were several pens of heavy supplementary fed yearling heifers sold between 176 cents and 192 cents per kilogram.
Feedlots and restockers purchased a number of steers and heifers, both vealers and yearlings. Fewer numbers were purchased on a percentage basis, and most made from 175 cents to 192 cents with some B muscle vealers making to 218 cents per kilogram to be fed on grain.
