Supply fill drops prices

QUALITY was mixed in a slightly larger penning at VLE Pakenham that included a good number of grown cattle.
The competition was unchanged, as were some of the prices, but now that some processors have partly caught up their supply, some heifers sold at cheaper rates.
The best quality vealers were slightly dearer.
With around 200 vealers penned there were more on offer, but the larger number increased the mix in quality.
The very best vealers made to 239.2 cents with most of the better quality B and C muscle vealers making between 190 cents to 228 cents per kilogram. Others were between 168 cents and 200 cents per kilogram.
There was another good supply of 480 yearlings penned, some of which were supplementary fed steers and heifers.
These made from 190 cents to 215 cents per kilogram. The large number of pens of steers and heifers were ore mixed in quality, which created a larger range of prices.
The best quality steers made between 185 cents to 202 cents, and similar graded heifers were from 178 cents to 190 cents per kilogram.
Because there were more D muscle, and fatter heifers penned, other heifers made from 160 cents to 180 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers totaled 145 head, grown heifers, cows and bulls, 110 head. Demand for the heavy steers and bullocks was equally as strong, making between 179 cents and 194 cents per kilogram. Grown heifers and cows made from 137 cents to 179 cents per kilogram.
Feedlots purchased fewer cattle, but mostly because there were few suitable cattle on offer. Prices for cattle to feed-on were mostly between 170 cents and 206 cents per kilogram.
