Demand drags down market

DEMAND and quality were the two major factors in a decrease in prices for the Fat Sale this week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul.
Processors declared vealers are still strong but bullocks, steers and heifers have eased across all yards.
Bullocks eased 11 cents to 163.9 cents, quality was good with the best making 176.6 cents.
Heifers were also affected by the lower quality and slipped 17 cents to 150.5 cents, with a top of 200 cents.
Steers also dropped 17 cents but with a larger average of 166.6 cents.
Steers failed to reach last week’s top settling for 183.6 cents. Steers this week showed a few pens of unfinished head. Veal remained firm at 186.4 cents, keeping their appeal. The top was however easier at 232 cents.
Stores sold to very good demand, with 26 light to medium weights making to $430 and averaging $363 per head.
With demand for export quality easier, the bull and cow sale on Thursday followed suit from Wednesday with all slipping in price, albeit not to the extent of Wednesday.
Eleven bulls were back nine cents to 154.1 cents and reached 174.6 cents, 17 bullocks also nine cents easier at 159.4 cents to make to 164.6 cents, and 391 cows copied the others dropping nine cents to 131.7 cents, with a slightly lighter top of 160 cents.
The draw for Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 October is as follows: 1, Gibbon; 2, Scotts; 3, Landmark; 34, Elders; 5, SEJ.
