Riverina rain creates flow-on effects

THE VLE Pakenham market was affected both by price trends the previous week, but also the weather.
There was only a very slight fall in supply but fewer bullocks were penned after last week’s price falls.
The competition was better than expected after all the rain in the Riverina, which affected supply up there and increased demand here.
Having said that, it was difficult to quote this sale with prices varying across all weights and grades, which was not necessarily driven by quality.
Lighter weight vealers were dearer, as were some of the yearling heifers, while most other sales were firm to six cents per kilogram cheaper.
There were more vealers penned with 150 offered, but their weight and quality varied.
The few very good quality vealers weighed less than previously, and sold at cheaper rates early.
However, prices improved later to see B muscle vealers make from 201 cents to 236 cents per kilogram.
Other vealers made between 172 cents and 200 cents with the best light weight vealers to 220 cents per kilogram.
Heifers outnumbered steers of the 440 yearlings penned and, once again here, the quality was very mixed.
Supplementary fed yearlings supplied the best quality making from 188 cents to 214 cents, while better quality grass finished steers made between 172 cents and 196 cents per kilogram.
The price for yearling heifers depended on quality, weight, age and who they suited with sales varying anywhere between 170 cents and 197 cents per kilogram for C muscle grades.
Plainer condition D muscle heifers were from 140 cents to 175 cents, but some purchased to feed-on made as high as 192 cents per kilogram.
Around 300 grown cattle were penned, which varied between bullocks, cows, grown heifers and bulls.
While bullocks sold at rates to eight cents per kilogram lower, they still made from 172 cents to 179 cents with medium weights to 182 cents per kilogram.
Manufacturing steers made from 152 cents to 172 cents per kilogram.
Only a small number of cows were penned, which made from 138 cents to 155 cents per kilogram.
