Their Fresh Words come out

THE City of Casey has selected the winners from a talented group of young writers for its Fresh Words Young Writer Competition.
Young people in Years 7 to 12 were invited to submit work in the categories of Creative Writing, Poetry and Lyrics or English as a Second Language.
An awards ceremony was held on this month to present the winners of each category with their awards.
The guest speaker at the event, Lia Hills, whose debut novel for young adults The Beginners Guide to Living was published in 2009, encouraged the young writers to build on their writing skills and to make the most of opportunities to gain exposure for their work.
The presentation also featured an original musical performance by acoustic duo Kaity and Madie Dunstan, as well as a performance by local solo artist Madison Pritchett.
City of Casey Mayor Lorraine Wreford said the competition has grown in size since it kicked off.
“Now in its third year, the Fresh Words Competition continues to grow in popularity, and, this year, more than 100 entries were received,” she said.
The Creative Writing category winners were Reece Hooker, Hiba Bilal and Jessica Gadsden. Hannah Greely, Courtney Dunn and Alysha Bonell were the Poetry and Lyrics winners. The English as Second Language categories were won by Nuo Xu, Mohammed Ashiq Azad and Khalema Nazori.
