BERWICK’S Steve Owen has many reasons to smile.
The 36-year-old along with championship driver Jamie Whincup just won the Gold Coast 600 over the weekend, three weeks after they came second at the V8 Supercar Bathurst 1000 at Phillip Island which included Owen setting the fastest time of the meeting with a 1min 32.32sec run around the 4.45km circuit.
The 102-lap win in Queensland was Owen’s first championship win with team-mate Whincup and with Team Vodafone. They both managed to hold off the fast finishing Ford young gun Shane Van Gisbergen over the epic 300-kilometre race.
Owen currently leads the Fujitsu Series on 1268 points, in front of Nick Percat (1093) and David Russell (1063) and is gearing up for the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge next month.
