Prices hold firm on strong demand

IT would appear that the Tuesday grown cattle sale at VLE Pakenham may become redundant if you take this week’s young cattle sales into account.
The yarding was slightly smaller in number, but if you took out the grown cattle penned, there was only a small yarding of young cattle for this time of year.
However, the grown cattle are being penned because of the buyer support, and coupled with strong demand for young cattle, prices were mostly unchanged to dearer.
Some of the competition was created by feedlots and restockers purchasing here, as store cattle sales are very dear.
There were 250 vealers penned, which varied in weight and breeding, but their quality was mostly good to very good. Light weight vealers sold to the best demand making from 190 cents to 232 cents, while the heavier vealers of better quality made between 197 cents and 229 cents per kilogram. Other C and D muscle vealers made from 167 cents to 195 cents per kilogram.
Yearling steers and heifers were penned, but with the very good season, there was a lot of weight. Lighter weight steers and heifers made from 180 cents to 205 cents with supplementary fed to 219 cents per kilogram. Heavier steers were between 179 cents and 200 cents with heifers from 170 cents to 186 cents per kilogram.
The balance of the yarding were grown heifers, bullocks, cows and bulls, which all sold very well despite some heavy weight and heavy fat cover.
Heifers made from 150 cents to 181 cents, bullocks 170 cents to 183 cents, and cows made mostly from 140 cents to 160 cents per kilogram.
Some of the grown heifers weighed up to 720 kilograms liveweight and most of the bullocks were between 580 kilograms and 830 kilograms liveweight.
The very heavy bullocks, and other manufacturing grades were between 152 cents and 175 cents per kilogram.
