Numbers go up as year closes

AS WE draw close to the Christmas/New Year holiday break, numbers are increasing as expected at VLE Pakenham.
There was a small change in the quality of the cattle penned, and although the yarding was of good to very good quality, dressing percentages will be fractionally lower.
All of the usual buyers, or processors were present and operating, but the larger number, and the slight change in quality saw prices ease one cent to five cents per kilogram.
There was a larger penning of 650 vealers sold, but again the demand was weaker for these.
Most of the cheaper rates were seen over the heavier weight vealers, which made between 178 cents and 223 cents per kilogram.
Lighter weight vealers again sold to the best demand making from 185 cents to 216 cents per kilogram.
Yearling steers and heifers were in larger proportions with 470 and 375 head penned respectively.
Again the quality was good with quite a number of heavier cattle penned with a lot of cattle weighing from 420 kilograms to over 600 kilograms liveweight.
Steers made mostly from 180 cents to 203 cents, and heifers were between 167 cents and 196 cents per kilogram for most sales.
Some supplementary fed yearlings made from 190 cents to 216 cents per kilogram.
Feedlots and restockers purchased a range of cattle between 165 cents and 212 cents per kilogram.
Heavy yearling steers, plus grown steers, heifers and cows made up the balance of the yarding. Grown steers made from 178 cents to 188 cents, while prime C muscle bullocks were between 174 cents and 185 cents per kilogram.
Grown heifers made to 168 cents with most of these, plus cows between 138 cents and 161 cents per kilogram.
