Prices firmer for vealers, heifers

VEALERS and heifers saw good rises this week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, while bullocks and steers remained firm for their condition.
Weights were slightly lighter for these two which eased the average four cents for both.
A good penning of store calves saw prices climb to $600 per head and return an average of $485 for the open auction section.
Bullocks eased four cents to 165.5 for a top of 184, heifers rose four cents to 172.6 to make to 201.6, steers slipped four cents to 179.1 with a good top of 198 and veal lifted seven cents to 204.9.
Good quality store veal made to 266.2 for weights around the 230 kilogram mark while heavier processor veal made to 229 cents.
A smaller yarding of good quality bulls on Thursday saw a three cent increase in averages to 154.5, and 174.6 was the top price for bulls.
Cows rose 1.5 to 140.5, a larger proportion of heavier beef cows saw prices reach 168 cents, lighter dairy cows eased slightly and heavy dairy cows remained firm on last sale.
Bullocks kept on par with the Wednesday sale averaging 166.2 to make to 175 cents for the top. The draw for Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 December is as follows: 1, Scotts; 2, SEJ; 3, Gibbon; 4, Elders; 5, Landmark.
