Bonsais to the rescue

– Jessica Buccolieri
In the smog-filled city of Reflection Bay, children are constantly being admitted to hospital because of the polluted air they breathe.
The earth is basically a black ball of muck caused by the not so fictitious global warming.
When Toby Williams discovers his famous grandfather’s invention it kick starts a whole sequence of thrilling events.
His grandfather was Henry Lewis, a scientist who 30 years ago claimed to have the cure for global warming.
He was forced into reclusion after the scientific community shunned his suggestions, ruining his reputation.
But Henry continued his research until the day he died. That’s when Toby came across his walking, talking bonsai plants – the key to ending global warming.
With Henry gone it’s up to Toby to protect his friends Az, Fig, Fuchsia and Spike – the Bonsai Warriors – from scientists who want to take advantage of their abilities.
Author Vicky Fisher knows what she’s doing when it comes to writing stories with an educational agenda.
Her message: global warming is here and it’s real.
It makes sense then that the target audience is children, the generation that may one day live in a world largely affected by global warming.
Bonsai Warriors will encourage young readers to not only recognise the issue, but also start acting on it.
And it’s fairly believable.
Man-made pollution is already impacting the air we breathe and, with advancements in technology, scientists have the potential to discover the science that will mend our warming earth.
With suggestions of genetic modification and cloning, the marvels of science are embedded in this novel and will keep children entertained for years to come.
