History in the making

Cardinia Shire mayor Brett Owen and stalwart Carey Williams cut the cake to mark the 20th anniversary of the Emerald Museum. 95348.

ONE of Cardinia Shire’s “most precious assets” marked its 20th birthday milestone in style earlier this month, with more than 100 residents packing out Emerald Museum.
A seemingly endless number of stories from locals, their families and the communities they helped form, were showcased at the celebration on 3 March.
The museum building is in the Nobelius Heritage Park next to the Puffing Billy train line in Emerald and houses many of the most significant chapters in the history of the community.
Park curator and much-loved community figure Carey Williams was honoured at the anniversary with the unveiling of the ‘Carey Williams Honour Roll’ – featuring the names of past and present curators and chairmen.
Mr Williams, a Gembrook resident, paid tribute to many of those who had helped make the region great, including Doug Twaits and Gus Ryberg, in an emotional speech.
Residents braved the heat to pack out the museum, and hung off his every word.
Cockatoo’s historical archives will also soon be housed at the museum, and Mr Williams said he “could only hope to inspire future generations to keep the museum and heritage park open”.
Cardinia Shire mayor Brett Owen helped Mr Williams cut the anniversary cake. He said the museum was “one of Cardinia Shire’s most precious assets”.
